SURFACE PREPARATION AND POWER TOOL TRAINING CLASS
Desco Manufacturing Co., Inc. holds its "Surface Preparation and Power Tool Training Class" periodically throughout the year at the corporate office in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. The class has been offered for seventeen years to the Navy and has continued to prove effective in aiding in the reduction of time sailors take to complete surface preparation tasks. The course spans over a two-day period, during which students take a comprehensive look at what the proper use and application of surface preparation equipment entails. Instruction for tool repair is also covered. The objective is not solely to educate those attending the class, but to also impress upon them the importance of passing on this knowledge to their fellow shipmates.
Lectures regarding tool overview, appropriate tool use and maintenance, and proper application are given before students have the opportunity to work with the tools hands-on. Popular among the students is the Needlegun competition, where students contend to see who can disassemble and reassemble a Needlegun in the fastest time. The quickest time to date is 50.8 seconds.
The class is offered at no charge and is limited to three representatives per department. Participants in the class should have a minimum of three years in the Navy, with tool crib responsibilities and/or are active in surface preparation. Students are provided with breakfast (bagels, muffins, juice, coffee) and lunch each day, with a dinner social on the evening of the first day. Dress is casual.
